October Job List

• Cut back perennials as foliage dies down – remember, some look beautiful over-winter so think before you chop! Also, insects love a place to hide.
• Weather permitting, move/plant/split flowering herbaceous perennials
• If soil is still warm, plant hardy trees and shrubs
• Clear fallen leaves from lawns to prevent smothering
• Start protecting tender plants from chills with fleece - we have horticultural fleece by the length
• Continue to harvest late tomatoes, courgettes, beans, squashes and pumpkins
• Remove any young premature fruits from vines that won’t now ripen, focusing the energy onto the fruit that will
• Check irrigation systems before frost
• Mulch around fruit trees
• Afrer flowering, lift Dahlias, part-dry, cover with old compost, sand or vermiculite & keep frost-free
• Cut back old asparagus foliage
• Prune climbing roses and tie in any stems that could be damaged by wind
